Spain – Coruña – Ferrol – Part I (En)
We arrived at Ferrol last Friday and we parked in the municipal area for motorhomes, located 30 minutes walking from the harbour and the city centre. The site does not have services but the location is excellent to visit the city, as the walk is really easy and nice next to the river and crossing a very cool bridge and it is free! So we went towards the harbour to meet my cousin Alicia, the first time I was to meet her!
Ferrol is a city in the Province of A Coruña, in Galicia. The city has been a major naval shipbuilding centre for most of its history, being the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department since the time of the early Bourbons. The harbour, for depth, capacity and safety, is not equalled by many in Europe. The entrance is very narrow, commanded by forts, and may even be shut by a staccato. In the city centre, you can find many churches, the con-cathedral of San Julián de Ferrol, Magdalena street full of bars and terraces and two main squares: Amboage and Armas.
We met my cousin in the harbour and she took us to see the city centre and old town, stopping for some drinks and tapas on one of the terraces.
I was wearing new flip-flops and they destroyed my feet, finishing with the feet full of plasters. Alicia took us to a really cute place for lunch but all the tables were taken so she decided to take us to Doniños beach to a restaurant called Boa Onda, a really cool place on the top of the beach. We shared a tomato, mozzarella and red onions salad, Crab croquettes (Ben loved them) and Raxo (pork tenderloin) with white wine sauce and potatoes, all yummy with an amazing albariño (white wine) called Mar de Frades.
After lunch, Alicia took us to see the lighthouse in Prior cape with stunning views.
After that, we went to the motorhome so Alicia could see it and I could change my shoes and we went back to Ferrol harbour to take a boat to Mugardos. Asha’s first time in a boat as she does not like them but she did great even when she was pretty scared to go in and out! Mugardos is a town in front of Ferrol harbour, famous for its octopus restaurants, the paseo maritime is the village centre and is full of terraces and at the end of the paseo, you arrive at a beautiful beach. We saw all and had a drink on one of the terraces before taking the last boat back to Ferrol harbour at 8.30 pm.
And when we arrived back at the harbour there was a party with music bands playing.
Alicia drove us back to our motorhome around 10.3 pm and we arranged to meet again the next morning to go and discover more amazing places and you can see this in the Part II. Thank you very much to Alicia for a great day!
