Spain – Asturias – Llanes (En)

From Cantabria we went to Asturias known for its rugged coast, mountains, religious sites and medieval architecture, also for its typical cuisine as fabada (beans with chorizo), cachopo (beef fillet filled), its cheeses and the sider. The first place we visited was a town called Llanes framed by the long limestone Sierra del Cuera ridge. The port town of Llanes is home to the medieval castellated El Torreón, the Gothic Santa María del Conceyu church and the modernist Llanes Casino building.

We stayed in a motorhome area just 10 minutes walking from the town centre and below to the Paseo de San Pedro, a grassy clifftop promenade with crescent-shaped Sablón Beach at its eastern end. The area has no facilities apart from showers that I do not recommend trying, they look disgusting but the location is great to visit the town. We went to see the town and because it was a national holiday we saw a procession in the streets, a street market surrounding the ramparts and very peculiar fairy tale houses.

The old town is full of narrow streets with cider bars and restaurants. We went to a cider bar to have a drink and Ben saw for the first time how they serve the cider. The waiter serves the cider from the bottle really high to the glass without spilling near anything, he pours a small quantity and the customer drinks it in one go and then the waiter pours more. Ben loved it! He even took a video and send it to England! From there we went to a restaurant to have lunch. We ordered the menu of the day, which included a first course, a second course, a dessert, a bottle of water and a bottle of wine. Really cheap and good! We had for the first course the typical bean plate, fabada for Ben and beans with clams for me and for the second sea bass in Bilbao sauce for me and john dory a la meuniere for Ben. What we did not know is that the beans came in a massive pot, so we could only eat a little so we could eat our fish. Even like that, we were totally full when we finished and decided not to have more beans in Asturias, hahaha.

In the evening to walk the food, we went to the Paseo de San Pedro promenade on the clifftop which has amazing views of the town, coast and mountains.

The next day it was the town party celebrating its patron San Roque, there were processions with the people dressing in the typical dress of the area. The processions finished in the main square where they did the typical dances of the area. The locals told us that every area and town has different dances and dresses and they said the dresses of Llanes are the best because they have jet stones on them. And at night were fireworks.

And the next day we went to Ribadesella another town in Asturias which you can see it in the next post.
