Greece – Kalamias Tavern Castro (En)

The best thing about Kalamias Tavern is its food; it offers a variety of homemade dishes prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients, such as moussaka, fresh seafood, and well-cooked meats. Another advantage is that it is 100 meters from the Ionian Sea, allowing you to enjoy its crystal clear waters. All this at a great price.

Where to stay

We stayed in the tavern’s parking lot (37.87331, 21.1097, lat, long), right in front of the restrooms and showers. Parking is free, and you can use the restrooms, which are very clean and have seats and toilet paper, as well as the outdoor cold showers. There’s free Wi-Fi that works very well. The views from the parking lot are of the mountains and the children’s playground. You can get water from the taps located in the shower area. The tavern staff are very friendly. The beach, where some campervans park on the sand, is 100 meters from the tavern. I recommend going for a day or two to try the food; the best fries we’ve ever had!

What to do

Walking along the beach and swimming. When we were there, the water was still cold, and the umbrellas and sunbeds hadn’t been set up yet.

What to eat

The restaurant is known for its simple, traditional cooking methods. One day, we shared a chicken burger with fries. The best fries we’ve ever had! The burger was more than enough for both of us, and the whole meal cost €11. The menu changes daily depending on the best ingredients available. Another day, they had calf’s liver with onions and fries, which Ben ordered and loved. I got the Caesar salad, which was huge and delicious. The total came to €20. Ben wants to go back sometime to eat there again, especially for the fries.

Our next stop is Arkoudi, a picturesque coastal town with authentic Greek tavernas. It’s the town we’ve liked the most so far, and you’ll be able to see it in the next blog post.
