Greece – Arkoudi (En)
Arkoudi is a picturesque coastal village offering authentic Greek taverns and charming beach bars. For us, it’s the most beautiful village we’ve seen so far. The taverns are fantastic and have incredible views. Even the small church was lovely inside. We loved it!
Where to stay
We stayed at Faros Tavern (37.845014, 21.109995 lat, long), which has a campervan area in its parking lot. The tavern has the best views in the village, and we were lucky enough to park with a view of the beach. It costs €10 per day without electricity and €15 with electricity. We didn’t use the electricity. It has a toilet, drinking water, a chemical toilet and an outdoor shower with hot water. We loved the shower; it was a completely new experience. The managers are a very friendly Austrian couple with whom we had drinks in the evenings. They have two adorable dogs: Sunny, a puppy, and Rico, a very mischievous two-year-old male. The tavern is quite expensive. We were going to eat there one day, but the owner wasn’t there, so we didn’t eat there, which saved us money. The tavern is in the village, so you can explore it on foot, as well as go to the shops and the beach. We met Sophie and her husband, a very nice French couple. Sophie spoke really good Spanish and English. We hope to see them again in France.
What to see
The whole town is beautiful. We walked there and stopped first at a really cool tavern that you reached by going down a super steep alley. The views from there are incredible. We decided to come back for a drink and something to eat another day.
We continued exploring the village, passing by more bars and typical houses until we reached the Church of Saint Nicholas, which is beautiful inside. The church is what remains of the Monastery of San Nicolás, founded in Byzantine times and destroyed during the Italian-German occupation in 1942.
We ended up on the fine sandy beach, where there are beach bars with sun loungers and umbrellas.
What to do
We enjoyed the beach in the hammocks, drinking iced coffee called Fredo (typical of Greece) and trying to swim. But the water was quite cold.
Another day, we crossed the rocks to see what was on the other side and discovered a hotel with a huge pool and a bar where they told us we could use it if we bought something. We liked our beach in town better.
As we mentioned, we went to eat at Hipocampus Restaurant because it was so cute. We decided to try the sardines because we love them, but we were a little disappointed. They were served open and not grilled. However, they did serve us delicious bread with tomato. The whole meal, including a jug of white wine, cost us 17 euros.
