Spain – Fuengirola (En)
Fuengirola is a city on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, known for its sandy beaches. South of the city centre, the medieval Moorish castle of Sohail rises above the coast and hosts concerts, festivals, and a medieval market in the summer.
We went to Fuengirola to have lunch with Joy and Sham, some of Ben’s friends, and we did a little sightseeing.
What to see
We parked in the parking lot below the castle, and the first thing we saw was Sohail Castle. At 38 meters above sea level, it offers beautiful views over the Fuengirola River estuary, the Mediterranean, and a large stretch of coastline dominated by the Sierra de Mijas.
We climb the hill to the castle and enter through the main entrance, which opens onto a vast courtyard surrounded by walls. Since its Christian occupation in 1485, Sohail Castle has endured a turbulent past, being razed and rebuilt numerous times. It was built of stone, using masonry, with brick walls, adobe, and stone blocks to reinforce some parts of the building. This fortress was meticulously restored and maintained to prevent further deterioration and allow it to be used as a tourist and cultural resource.
What to eat
We crossed the bridge to Chiringuito El Cateto, where we met up with our friends. The place is great for sitting right next to the sea. We ate sardines, which cost 4 euros each, clams and salad. Everything is very good, so we recommend it!
After lunch, we strolled through the old town of Fuengirola, where we took several photos of statues and the town hall.
Our next trip was to Rincón de la Victoria to visit our friends Reme and Lolo. This town is home to the only sea cave visitable in Europe: the Treasure Cave. You’ll be able to see it in the next blog!
