Spain – Loja (En)
This small town, bisected by the Genil River, is located on the western edge of Granada and served as a defensive centre under the Moors. The remains of walls and a tower from the old Islamic Alcazaba show its military importance as a Moorish fortress.
Where to stay
We stayed in the municipal RV park (37.171052, -4.156104 lat, long), which is free. It’s next to the municipal pavilion, which has water filling and emptying services. It is close to bars and restaurants, and about 5 minutes across the bridge from the city centre.
What to see
We crossed the river to reach the 16th-century Church of San Gabriel, which preserves numerous Renaissance architectural elements. Its side façade and interior vault are notable, but we couldn’t see the inside because it was closed. Another notable church, built on the site of a former mosque, is the Church of Santa María de la Encarnación, which features Gothic and Mudejar elements and an elegant bell tower.
From here we went to the Tropical campsite between Marbella and Estepona, where we visited Fuengirola Castle, which you can see in the next blog!
