Germany – Limburg (En)

Limburg is a city in western Germany, with its beautiful almost completely preserved medieval old town, its famous Georg Cathedral and Limburg Castle, it forms an impressive complex to see and attracts many tourists.

Where to stay

We stayed in the motorhome parking outside the campsite (50.388745, 8.073321 lat, long) beside the river Lahn. Parking costs 17 euros a day, or you can stay just 4 hours for 7 euros. There is electricity for 50 cents 2Kwh, we use electricity even turning on the air conditioning and we pay at most 2 euros for the whole day. The disposal of grey and black water and 100 litres of water are free. The location is great since in a 5-minute walk along the river bank you are on the old bridge that crosses to the old town.

What to see

We walked along the river until we reached the historic Lahn Bridge, built between 1315 and 1354 which replaced an old wooden bridge. This bridge is made up of six arches and spans a length of 106 meters across the Lahn. In the middle of this bridge, you will find a stone figure dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of bridges. On the north wall of the bridge tower, there is a figure of Madonna with a child, which comes from the bridge chapel demolished in 1827. As you walk across the Lahn Bridge, you have a beautiful view of the Cathedral and the Castle. At the end of the bridge you find The Cat Tower, a watchtower from the 13th century that is part of the old fortifications of the city, inside is the Limburg Naval Museum, where the battleship Bismarck is located.

We enter the old town full of half-timbered houses, where you will find the oldest house in Limburg known as the Gothic house, which dates back to the year 1289 and, therefore, one of the oldest half-timbered buildings in Germany.

We continued walking through the centre and found a street market, the Evangelical Church of Limburg and the town hall, we entered the old town again until we reached the House of the Seven Vices (or seven deadly sins). A half-timbered house from 1567, displaying the artistically carved symbols of the seven vices: lust, anger, pride, envy, greed, sloth and gluttony.

We went up to the square where the Limburg Cathedral is located. The building dates back to 1175 and is considered one of the most beautiful creations of late Romanesque architecture. Since 1235 this Cathedral also functioned as the parish church of Limburg, so in the first part of the 13th century the sandstone baptismal font was placed, one of the most beautiful remains of Staufer art in Germany. Next to the Cathedral is Limburg Castle, which has numerous works from the Middle Ages.

The next day we went to Bad Kreuznach, a spa town, best known for its medieval bridge which you can see in the next blog!
