Our review

The best thing about this campsite is its location, next to the canal: you can walk or cycle along the river to the historic centre, about 40 minutes on foot. It opens on 1 March, and it's a little run down in places.

We came for the showers and the laundry, but the washing machine was broken. The showers are hot with OK pressure; the toilets have no seats or paper, and both are unisex. The dishwashing area is outside, with hot water – but watch out for the mosquitoes. The filling and emptying point, with the chemical toilet point, is past reception, opposite the pool, in the middle of the site, so it's hard to reach; we didn't use it. When it rains, big puddles form on the way to the facilities.

The pool only opens in summer. The mini golf, basketball court, table football and ping-pong are rather neglected. There's a restaurant and bar, which we didn't try, and some really cute, well-behaved hens wander around the pitches. The Wi-Fi is poor – we used our own hotspot. A shopping centre with a supermarket, launderette and fast food is a 15-minute walk.

Top tips

Bring mosquito repellent, especially for the outdoor dishwashing area.

Good to know

The washing machine was broken when we stayed, and the pool only opens in summer.
