Spain – Murcia (En)
Murcia is a university city in the southeast of Spain and the capital of the Autonomous Community, also called Murcia. The Cardenal Belluga Square is the city’s architectural jewel, where the cathedral, with its mix of styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque, and the 18th-century Episcopal Palace contrast notably with the modern City Hall of the 1990s.
Where to stay
We stayed in the Huerta de Murcia camper area (37.98909, -1.102361 lat, long), with toilets and showers, emptying and filling of grey and black water, and large spaces. It costs 14 euros per day without electricity and 18 euros with electricity. The toilets and showers are super clean. It is a 40-minute walk from the centre, but the walk is very cool, you can go along the river or through the city. Recommended!
What to see
We walked to the centre, leaving Asha behind as she had already taken a one-hour walk. Instead of going along the river, we decided to go through the city, and we were glad we did because we found a street market where we bought artichokes for 1.40! Very cheap! It turns out that Murcia is where they grow artichokes!
We continue walking towards the centre and pass the Museum of Fine Arts, which is located in the former Silk Palace and Arms Room from the 17th century, with Renaissance elements and the royal coat of arms on the north façade.
The next thing we saw was the Municipal Market, which we entered to see and then we walked along the main street that took us to the Church of Santo Domingo, built between 1722 and 1745. It has two facades and is attached to the Chapel of the Rosary from 1543.
Then we arrive at the Cardenal Belluga Square where the Cathedral of Santa Maria is located, the most important building in the city. It has many Renaissance and Baroque elements, although its interior is fundamentally Gothic. It was built in 1394. It has a 96-metre-high tower and 25 bells. The city hall is also located in the square.
From there we went to Flower Square where we were told they had the best tapas. And we tried different tapas, especially artichokes!
We recommend visiting Murcia, especially to try the delicious artichokes! Our next stop is Lorca, a city in the Community of Murcia famous for its ancient castle known as the Fortress of the Sun, which you can see in the next blog!
