Germany – Bavaria – Oberammergau (En)

Oberammergau is a small town in the state of Bavaria located in an idyllic location with the mountains in the background. It is known for the large number of hand-painted frescoed houses, especially the famous painted houses of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel, and the wood carvings.

Where to stay

We stayed in the parking lot of the town campsite (47.590099, 11.0693 lat, long) since the campsite was very expensive. In park4night it says 26 euros, but when we arrived they told us it was almost 38 euros, 10 euros and something for the pitch, plus 11 euros and something per person, plus 5 euros in taxes! They told us we could park outside for 20 euros but couldn’t use the campsite services. In the end that’s what we did, we paid 21 euros because they charge you 1 euro per dog. Outside you can empty grey and black water, but water costs 50 cents per 50 litres and you pay 1 euro per KWh. The good thing about the site is its location, right in the town and in a paradisiacal place surrounded by the mountains.

What to see

We walked to the town since it is next door, and when you got to the centre you began to find the typical Bavarian houses with painted frescoes. The centre is full of cafes, restaurants and shops with painted frescoes, it is like being in a fairytale. Many of the frescoes are religious since the town is famous because The Passion of Christ is represented every 10 years. The next one will be held in 2030.

Highlights in the town include the Church of St Pedro and St Pablo, which we visited inside.

This town is also famous for wood carvings with many shops selling authentic works of art. We didn’t buy anything but Hannah and Stewart bought a beautiful birdhouse.

Finally, we went to look for the famous houses of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel.

We said goodbye to our friends the next day, as Hannah and Stewart returned to England via Belgium and Ralf and Gaby returned to their home in the Black Forest.

We will see Hannah and Steart again in England and Ralf and Gaby perhaps somewhere else in Germany before leaving the country. So we continued our trip alone and went to Bad Tölz on the Isar River, which has a charming historic centre, in an idyllic natural environment, which you can see in the next post!
