Germany – Black Forest – Freudenstadt (En)

The town of Freudenstadt in the northern Black Forest has long been a centre for ‘wellness tourism’ because of the relatively mild climate and high number of sunny days experienced in this part of the Black Forest. It is also known for its market square with arcades. According to the local tourist office, it is the largest in Germany.

Where to stay

We stayed in the motorhome area (48.471759, 8.415994 lat, long), which is free and you can empty grey and black water, to fill the water is 1 euro per 100l. There is a shopping centre on the corner with a supermarket and it is about 10 minutes walk from the city centre. We recommend it to visit this beautiful town.

What to see

The town centre of Freudenstadt houses many of the sights in the area. The massive market square, rebuilt since the destruction at the end of World War II, now houses Renaissance-style arcades (known as the ‘Bƶgele’) and the 50 fountains created to mark the 400th anniversary of the town. The Freudenstadt tourist office can be found in the market square, along with a small regional museum covering local culture and the development of wellness tourism. The Town Hall has a tower which can be climbed during opening hours for a view over the centre of Freudenstadt.

Following the old town you arrive at a square surrounded by fountains and statues where the Protestant Church is located, built in 1608 in the Renaissance style, some Gothic elements were added to the angular shape of the church. It was destroyed at the end of the Second World War and its complete restoration took place between 1978 and 2008. The interior is quite curious and strange for a church, with a world globe at the entrance.

What to eat

We decided to have lunch at the Speckwirt restaurant in the church square where they had a menu of the day. Hannah, Ralf, Gaby and I ordered the pork chop with chips and salad; Ben ordered a typical dish like tripe with some delicious potatoes with bacon, he liked more the sauce of the tripes in Spain. Finally, Stewart ordered the schnitzel with fried egg, cheese, bacon, potatoes and sauce! Stewart’s plate was huge and could have eaten three people! My dish was 10.60 euros and Ben’s was 12 euros. We recommend it if you come to this beautiful city!

The next destination in the black forest is Oberkirch which has a historic centre with picturesque half-timbered houses that you can see in the next blog!
