Spain – Cuenca – San Clemente (En)

San Clemente is a municipality located southwest of the province of Cuenca, in Castilla-La Mancha. Since 1980 it has been declared a Historical-Artistic Site.

Where to stay

We stayed in the caravan area of the town (39.397202, -2.43585 lat, long), it is free and you can load and unload the water easily and without problems. Huge plots, and a lot of space. A 10-minute walk to the historic centre of the town. We arrived in the morning and there was almost no one, we went to see the town and had lunch and everything was full! with caravans and vans parking in the next field and everywhere. We recommend arriving in the morning.

What to see

La Mayor Square was declared a Historical-Artistic Site. The most important buildings to see in San Clemente are concentrated here. You enter the square through a semicircular arch and the first thing you find is the Old Town Hall, a Plateresque building from the 16th century that is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest. The ground floor is a porticoed gallery with seven Doric arches and columns and the upper floor, also has arches and columns, cornices and a frieze with openwork rosettes divided in the centre by the shield of Charles I. Currently, it houses inside the Museum of Graphic Work which has an exhibition that houses more than 150 works of graphic art.

The Parish Church of Santiago Apostle was built in the 16th century and consists of three naves divided into five sections: the first two in Renaissance style. The last three sections, the western façade with its tower and the south façade, are Gothic. Inside, a magnificent Renaissance altarpiece on the High Altar and an alabaster cross of Gothic-Flemish influence draw attention. On one side of the square is the Roman Arch, from the 18th century. This construction connects with the church and leads to the Pósito Square. It is an old grain warehouse governed by the municipality.

The new Town Hall is also located in the Plaza Mayor, with a bell tower and clock in its centre.

From there we went to the streets below the old town and had lunch at the El Rincón de la Nueva Restaurant. They gave us free red prawns as a tapa with our drinks and then we shared a half portion of pork fillets with cheese and mushroom sauce with fries and a portion of Iberian secret that was delicious! With glasses of white wine and red wine. All for 33 euros! We recommend it if you go to San Clemente.

We finished our tour of the town taking some photos with the statue of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, next to the motorhome area.

And the next day we went to Cuenca, famous for its hanging houses that you can see in the next post!
