Spain – Basque Country – Orduña (En)

Last Thursday we went to Orduña, the town where my uncle and auntie live to see them and see my cousins on holiday also there. We parked in the town parking where the motorhomes can stay 72 hours, totally free but without services. My cousin Aitor and his wife Piwi came to the parking to meet us when we arrive and see the motorhome and then we went to a bar to meet my uncle, auntie, my cousin Gorka and his daughter Maia 5 years old. It was great to see them all, as I haven’t seen my uncle for a long time and I met for the first time my cousin Gorka and his daughter as they live in Venezuela. Maia and Asha were friends instantaneously.

Then we went to see the town. Orduña is the only town with the title of city in the province of Bizkaia with 4000 inhabitants more or less, so everybody knows everybody. The historic and monumental centre of the city was declared a cultural asset in 1997. A deserved cataloguing since it is the largest medieval centre in Bizkaia and one of the few that preserves the remains of the old walls that defended the town. The palaces and other buildings that we find throughout the old town make clear the relevance that this urban centre had in Euskadi, buildings such as the Sanctuary of Antigua which keeps in its interior the image of the patron saint of the town. A monument of her can be found also at the top of the Txarlazo as you can see in the picture above. Church of Santa Maria, Diaz de Pimenta Palace, Mimenza Palace, Foru Square, Orduña Museum and many more as you will see in the pictures.

After visiting the old town we went to a restaurant that my uncle arranged for us to have lunch, where we ate very good and a lot, so thank you very much to my uncle! As it was really hot, 38 degrees, we went to the municipal swimming pool with Aitor, Piwi and Maia. We went to the motorhome and stayed the night there, as at 8 pm we went to see a concert by a band friends of my cousin Gorka. First, it was a warming band singing in Spanish and after that, the main band sang in English songs by Red hot, James Brown, etc. They were really good and played from 9 pm to 12 am. We had a very good time!

The next day Friday, due to the heat we stayed in the swimming pool until the evening when we moved to the town parking and we went for drinks and tapas with Gorka and my uncle and auntie in the old town, Ben and I finished full of tapas and a little dizzy, hahaha. I met my uncle’s brother and a friend of my auntie called Lola, both knew my parents.

That night we said bye to everybody as the next day we were going really early to Cantabria, to Santillana del Mar where we are now. Thank you very much to my uncle and auntie, it was a pleasure to see you all and I hope to see you soon again!
