SPAIN – Basque Country – Zarautz – Mutriku (En)

We crossed to Spain and we went to Zarautz where we parked in a supermarket parking as it has motorhome places and there is a laundry also. So we did our shopping and washed our clothes.

Zarautz is a coastal town located in central Gipuzkoa, Basque Country. It is located about 15 Km west of San Sebastian and is home to the longest beach in the Spanish Basque Country, a 2.5 Km long beach, famous for its waves that attract surfers from all over the world. The beach is framed by a nice promenade. There are various sculptures along the path which continues west out of Zarautz until reaching Getaria about 4 Km away and at the eastern end is Mount Talaimendi. In the old town, there are two important buildings from the 15th century: the gothic church of Santa Maria la Real and the Zarautz Tower located right next to it. The Tower is home to the Museum of Art and History and is the oldest building in town. Zarautz is also known for its cuisine of fish and seafood. The famous Basque TV chef Karlos Arguiñano owns one of the best restaurants in Zarautz, currently run by five of its children, they offer traditional cuisine with a modern touch and also have a bar and terrace with a wide variety of pintxos right in front of the ocean.

We went first to the old town and in the square surrounded by bars, we had some typical Basque pintxos, the first time for Ben. We had mushrooms in salsa, ham & cheese courgette and ham croquet which was really yummy.

Then we went to the promenade and the beach. Along the promenade, there are many restaurants and sculptures and at the end is the restaurant of the famous chef Arguiñano.

From Zarautz we went to camping Galdona in Mutriku, a town of 5000 inhabitants. On our way, we stopped at a lookout to take pictures of the Bay of Biscay, with amazing views. The camping is on the top of a mountain so the way there is really steep. The facilities are ok, and there is a restaurant and bar with all that you need. The bathrooms are dirty and sometimes you have to ask to put the hot water in the showers because people just switch off the boiler but the owners, brother and sister, are really nice and helpful. We went on the motorbike to the beach. The beach is really wild between mountains, with a hippie shop and one beach bar. The beach is beautiful and the water is really nice! The way to the beach is very steep and on our way back our poor motorbike struggled a lot to go up, but in the end, we made it!

And here we are enjoying the beach until tomorrow when we are going to Orduña to meet my uncle, auntie and cousins! Looking forward to it!

Enjoy the rest of your trip and looking forward to reading more adventures.

Hi, in Basque Country we got 38 degrees! It was too much, we were all the time in the municipal pool. It was great because we saw my uncle, auntie and cousins. Now we are in a beautiful place in Cantabria, only 20 degrees! and tomorrow I think we are crossing to Asturias. Next time Cor takes out the BMW do a picture and send it, Ben will be jealous. hahaha
