Germany – Bavaria – Passau (En)
Passau, the queen of the baroque today. The city with three rivers has an immense artistic and architectural wealth, greatly influenced by the architecture of the Italian masters. The view of the city is impressive with picturesque alleys and beautiful squares.
Where to stay
There are several areas for motorhomes in the city, we stayed in the one in Ilzbrucke (48.578822, 13.474007 lat, long) because it is the closest to the centre and you can walk there. The area is located on the bank of the Danube next to a very nice park with great views. It costs 15 euros per day, with electricity for 50 cents per kWh, and water for 1 euro for 50 liters. Free emptying of grey and black water. Parking is limited to 24 hours. We recommend arriving early since there was no space in the afternoon, and many motorhomes had to find another place.
What to see
We walked towards the city centre and to get there you have to cross a bridge with the city’s best views, with the Veste Oberhaus castle in the north and the Maria Hilf pilgrimage church in the south.
We crossed the bridge and the first thing we found was the Town Hall in a square with the tourist office. From there we headed into Höllgasse, the artists’ street in the old town, with its beautiful old houses, studios, workshops and galleries. It should be noted that this street was prepared in case of flooding since it is on the banks of the Danube, which you can see in the photos.
Then we arrive at the square where the baroque-style Saint Stephen’s Cathedral is located. Its organ is the largest cathedral organ in the world. The cathedral can be seen from the inside from its main entrance, which we entered through but they were saying mass so I only took a photo out of respect. Going around the corner we discovered a square with a door through which you can also enter and we saw the interior of this magnificent cathedral.
We continued walking through the old town until we reached the Church of Saint Paul from 1663-1678, which was renovated in 2012-2013 and which we saw inside. From there we passed through the area of restaurants and old inns until we returned to the bridge.
The next day we went to Waldkirchen, a charming town on the border with Austria and the Czech Republic, surrounded by nature which you can see in the next blog!
