Germany – Bavaria – Waldkirchen (En)
Waldkirchen is a charming small town in the border triangle with Austria and the Czech Republic of the Bavarian Forest, surrounded by nature with many hiking trails and restaurants typical of the area.
Where to stay
We stayed at Camping Bayerwald (48.716098, 13.626888 lat, long) in the Bavarian Forest, in a lovely location with hiking trails. It is more than 3 km on foot to get to the town, but you can take the bus at the door for free with the campsite ticket. The campsite is under construction, but the work does not bother you. The toilets and showers are luxurious, with a washing machine and dryer for 4 euros, a dishwashing area and a dog shower. It has a playground and a petting zoo, with ponies, rabbits, etc. that are charming. It also has a typical restaurant with a terrace. Emptying grey and black water is free, but water costs 1 euro per 100 litres and 80 cents per kWh of electricity. The price varies if you stay in the lower area near the facilities or upstairs. They told us that upstairs it was more or less 20 euros a day, paying for the extra electricity and water mentioned. Down 38 euros! We stayed upstairs, but when we went to pay they told us it was 25 euros a day for the tourist tax! I have to say that we were not happy at all!
What to see
We went on our motorcycle to see the town, where there are many supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl. We parked outside the town hall and went to the main street where you find the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, which is being renovated but we could see inside. The main street has shops with statues, colourful houses, a fountain, a totem in the centre and numerous Bavarian restaurants with waitresses dressed in traditional costumes.
What to eat
We decided to have lunch in one of the traditional restaurants and ordered two typical dishes from the area. Ben had pork liver with fried onions and mashed potatoes, and I had pork schnitzel with mushroom sauce and macaroni and cheese which was delicious but huge! We could have shared any dish for both of us! But I don’t eat liver. All for about 35 euros with drinks included.
In the evening we explored one of the campsite’s hiking routes.
We said goodbye for now to Germany and went to the Czech Republic, where our first stop will be Český Krumlov bisected by the Vltava River and dominated by its 13th-century castle, which you can see in the next post!
