Spain – Casares (En)

Casares is a municipality in the province of Málaga, located on the border with the province of Cádiz. Casares is the white Andalusian town’s prototype: narrow, steep, winding streets and whitewashed houses. It was declared a Historic Artistic Site in 1978.

What to see

Castle and Upper Zone. We went with my mother to visit Casares and the upper area, where the best views are and where you can park without a problem. Located at the top of the town, the Castle dates back to the 13th century and is of Arab origin. The walled enclosure is shaped like an irregular polygon. On the other side of the Castle, you find the Old Church of La Encarnación from the end of the 16th century, it was rebuilt and converted into the Blas Infante Cultural Center, inaugurated in 2010 and where you can find exhibitions on the history of the municipality, as well as other cultural manifestations.

Other things to visit in Casares are the birthplace’s house of Blas Infante, considered the Father of the Andalusian Homeland, for being the greatest ideologue of political Andalusianism. Currently, in addition to being a tourist information point, the house houses a permanent exhibition with fragments of the life and works of this illustrious native. Hedionda Baths, which are Ferruginous Sulfur Baths. Legends attribute its origin to Julius Caesar himself. What is certain is that his troops bathed in its waters while awaiting the confrontation with Pompey and found relief from skin diseases. The bath area is declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

Due to the steep streets and the inability to park in the centre of town, we went to Castellar de la Frontera, which you can see in the next blog.
