England – Broadway (En)
Broadway is a large village and civil parish in the Cotswolds. It is in the far southeast of Worcestershire, close to the Gloucestershire border, and it is sometimes referred to as the “Jewel of the Cotswolds“. Broadway is nestled at the foot of the rolling Cotswold hills. As its name suggests, Broadway is dominated by a wide tree-lined street packed with independent shops, restaurants, hotels and a few excellent museums.
We went to see Broadway with Ben’s mum (Janet) and John and Asha and Isabella (the dogs). When we arrived we discovered that it was a classic car (Triumph TR6) gathering on the main street, pretty cool to see it. So we walked through the main street, with its cute shops and typical Cotswolds buildings with honey-coloured limestone, mostly from the 16th century. After that, we went for lunch in a fish and chips pub, where I had the scampi and the others the fish and chips.
After lunch, Ben and I went to see the rest of the town, where there are buildings that look like palaces, such as the Lygon Arms, a hotel in a 17th-century building. There are also several museums as the Gordon Russell Design Museum, which celebrates the work of the renowned 20th-century furniture designer, or the Broadway Museum and Art Gallery where you can gain an insight into the history of the village and its cultural heritage. We also saw the manor, the church of St Michael and All Angels, and several thatched houses which I love!
We finished our visit to Broadway by going to see St. Eadburgha’s church, which was the original parish church of Broadway, a Christian place of worship which dates back to the 11th century. The church is still the symbol of Broadway’s history. It retains most of its ancient medieval features and is situated about a mile out of the village, nestled at the foot of the hill on Snowshill Road.
And we finished our time in England in the beautiful house of Ben’s mum.
We took the ferry to France, where our first stop was Berck with its seals’ beach, which you can see in the next post!
