Greece – Peloponnese – Finikounda (En)

Finikounda is a seaside village and a community in Pylos-Nestor, Messenia, Greece. It is situated in the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula, 9 km east of Methoni and 37 km southwest of Kalamata. The village is built at the head of a bay and the name is considered to be due possibly to the Phoenicians, who as a sailor people landed on the coast of the Peloponnese and founded the present site Windmill Finikounda.

We stayed at camping Anemomilos (36.805992, 21.800522 lat, long) located right on the beach and 5 minutes walking to the town. The facilities are really good, with perfect pressure in the showers. It has a kitchen area with fridges and freezers that you can use and an ice machine, the best! It is good for emptying and filling grey and black water and there is drinking water all over the place. It has a little bar and a mini market. The only objection I can say is that it does not have toilet paper and the wifi only works in the reception area, but the 4G works well. 23.50 euros per day. From our plot we have sea views and the beach is dog friendly as it is only for the people in the camping. Ben thinks this is the best camping we have stayed in! So we really recommend it if you come to this area.

We went to visit the town on the motorbike and it was good that we did it, as to arrive at the town you have to go down a very steep road, so imagine going back up. Finikounda is now one of the major tourist resorts of Messenia, combining harmonically mountain and sea. The attention of the visitors mainly attracts the stunning sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. It has a breakwater pier from where the local boys jump into the sea and yachts and sailing boats. The town has narrow streets full of shops and taverns, and in front of the sea, there are beach restaurants with sunbeds and sun umbrellas free, if you just order something to drink or eat. We enjoyed the free sunbeds and had a swim.

We went to have lunch in one of the beach restaurants. We wanted to try the famous grill octopus but they did not have more octopus, so we decided to share a plate of grilled big prawns, the best we have eaten in a long time! and a plate of grilled sardines which were the same good or better than the ones in Pyreaus. So we were really happy with our selection!

Our next stop will be Methoni, also known as Mothoni or Modona, famous for its amazing castle, surrounded by the Jonic Sea and linked to the town on one of its sides. And you can see this in the next post!
