Spain – Cadiz – Jerez de la Frontera (En)
We arrived on Saturday, after getting lost around Seville, to Jerez de la Frontera in the province of Cadiz. We stayed in the motorhome area in the South of the city, located in a huge shopping centre where you have everything, supermarkets, Decathlon, clothes shops, restaurants, etc. The area includes loading and unloading of black and grey water, toilets, a sink for washing dishes and electricity, all for 15 euros. Only the shower is 1 euro for 5 minutes but with very good pressure. In the area, you can also rent motorcycles and there is a motorcycle workshop. To go to the centre you have the bus at the door or you can walk for 30 minutes. By the way, the taxis in Jerez take dogs! On Saturday we took advantage and left our motorcycle to be repaired in the workshop and we went to see the shopping centre and finally bought the hula hoop I wanted in Decathlon!
On Sunday my cousin, David, came to pick us up in his car and see our motorhome, and then he took us to see the city and have lunch. The old town of Jerez surrounds the Fortress which is an 11th-century Moorish fortress. In Jerez, you will find The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art which is a prestigious riding school that organizes horse shows and has a carriage museum. The city is also known for flamenco music and sherry making in the so-called sherry triangle, which is located in the West, for its Cathedral, the church of San Miguel and its Arenal Square. We went to see first the Church of the Four Evangelists and from there to the Cathedral stopping on the way to have some drinks in one of the typical wine bars. We passed through squares full of wine bars and music bands playing. The atmosphere in Jerez is great, full of people and music.
From the Cathedral we went to the Fortress which is next to a park where was a woman with a parrot that became my friend and perched on my shoulder! The Fortress is huge and quite impressive to see it.
Then my cousin took us to Arenal square where he had reserved a table for lunch in an alley that if you don’t know it you will never find it. The alley is super pretty with hanging colour lanterns and colour umbrellas on the terrace. The restaurant is one of the oldest in Jerez, from 1943, and its interior has typical blue tiles. We shared several tapas for the three of us. Ben and David dared to eat kidneys and sweetbreads, I tried them but it is not my thing although they liked them a lot. Ben was the first time tried sweetbreads and he liked it. We also shared artichokes, which was what I liked the most, broad beans with baby squid (the first time we tried it, it was good although a bit strange), potato salad with tuna (very good) and marinated ribs which Ben and I really liked it.
After lunch we went to see the Church of San Miguel and to drink some typical wines of the area, I had a sweet Tio Pepe and Ben a fine wine. And at night we returned to the car through the city centre.
My cousin took us back to the motorhome where we had a few last drinks to say goodbye. Many thanks to David for showing us Jerez, a great day, we had an amazing time!
Today Tuesday we are waiting to see if they repair our motorcycle to see when we can continue our way, next stop Marbella! Where we hope to see David soon again.
