Peñiscola – Castle (En)

Yesterday we went to see Pope Moon castle as it is called. The entry included the castle and the gardens. The gardens were closed due to a strong wind so we will have to come back another day. The entry is 5 euros or 3.50 euros for pensioners or unemployed. Just entering the castle are amazing views to the town.

Inside the castle, you can see the different rooms like the chapel, meeting room, library, etc. The castle was given to the Mason order and you can read and see short movies about their origins, symbols, arms, way of life etc until the castle passed to another order. You can also see the study and private quarters of the Moon pope.

Around the castle you can go up to the top, towers and battlements, some places are really narrow stairs to go up. The views around the castle are amazing! The castle is a proper fortress and took a siege for months until the King Felipe of Borbon recovered it.

After seeing the castle we went around the alleys of the old town where we met Vicky a lovely owner of a beautiful shop in the square outside the castle and who recommend us to go to the Mercat restaurant for my birthday. Then we found a beautiful bar where we had some drinks and met the owner of the bar and the local painter with whom we had a very nice time. So we told them that we will come back tomorrow. And that is all until tomorrow Sunday when we will celebrate my birthday, will see the castle gardens and hopefully meet more nice people from the town.
