England – Oxford (En)
Finally, we went to visit Oxford, which was amazing! Oxford is the only city in Oxfordshire and revolves around its prestigious university, established in the 12th century. The architecture of its 38 colleges in the city’s medieval centre is fantastic. University College and Magdalen College are off the High Street, which runs from Carfax Tower to the Botanic garden on the River Cherwell. Two rivers go through Oxford, Cherwell and the Thames.
Oxford Castle and Prison was the first thing we visited. Oxford castle is a large, partly ruined medieval castle on the western side of central Oxford. Most of the original moated, wooden motte and bailey castle was replaced in stone in the late 12th or early 13th century and it was key in defending the city from Saxon invaders and played an important role during the Anarchy.
Then we went to the city centre and High Street to see the different buildings of the University, the Sheldonian Theatre, the St Mary the Virgin Church on Radcliffe square, Radcliffe Camera, Radcliffe Observatory, the library and the Ashmolean Museum which is the oldest museum in the UK. The city centre is full of pubs, restaurants and really cute shops, all surrounded by the most amazing buildings! I have to say that there are many Spanish in Oxford.
And from there we went to see Magdalen College and Christ Church Cathedral which has a dual role as cathedral and college chapel, this dual role is unique in the Church of England. And from Christ Church, we did our way to the Thames River, on our way we saw very strange cows with massive horns!
And we finished our visit to Oxford. It is one of my favourite cities because it is stunning! If you come to England you have to visit it.
