SPAIN – Amposta (En)
Amposta, located next to the Ebro River, is the capital of Montsià, the southernmost region of Catalonia. The symbol of the city is the Hanging Bridge built in 1915-1921. Other symbols of the city are its medieval towers, such as the Torre de la Carrova and the Torre de la Candela, which can be visited. One of the most beautiful places is the Delta Natural Park, where the old fishermen’s huts are located, built with reeds and olive and eucalyptus wood.
Where to stay
We stayed in the town’s motorhome area (40.705069, 0.585544 lat, long) with all the services: water, sewage, electricity, lighting, dishwashing area and garbage. Best of all, it’s free! It has 30 spaces but fills up quickly, so arriving in the morning is best. It’s close to Delta Park and the town centre, about 10 10-minute walk. We recommend it if you want to spend a few days. We spent 3 days here very well since the limit of stay is 72 hours.
What to see
The first thing we visited was Delta Park, with its old fishermen’s huts. It has a very pretty lake in the centre and is surrounded by palm trees.
Then we went to the city centre, where we saw the Museum of Tierras del Ebro, one of the most important museums in Catalonia in terms of ethnology, nature and archaeology. We couldn’t go in because it was January 1st and everything was closed. The Town Hall Square, where the parish church of the Assumption of Mary is located, was built in 1773 but was not finished until 1875. It was used as a food and distribution market during the Civil War. We also saw the Sinodal Church, which is very different from normal churches.
What to eat
In Amposta you can find many restaurants of different types such as seafood restaurants and restaurants serving Catalan and Mediterranean cuisine. In this area, rice dishes are the typical food, cooked in many different ways. We decided to eat the menu of the day in a local restaurant called Bon Gust, which we recommend if you come to Amposta. The menu cost us 16 euros but included a bottle of wine, a starter, a main course and dessert. For starters we shared a typical local rice dish with octopus, squid and vegetables that included artichokes, it was delicious! And for the main course, Ben ordered the fish of the day which was a kind of mini sole and I had the meat dish which included chicken, pork chop and chorizo, all with potatoes and vegetables. As we were full from dessert we ordered coffee!
From Amposta we went to Castellón de la Plana, located in the Valencian Community, where the Gothic-style Co-Cathedral of Santa María stands out in the city centre, which you can see in the next blog!
