Germany – Straelen (En)
Straelen is a small, pleasant town in the Lower Rhine region, near the border with the Netherlands. The cultivation of flowers and vegetables characterizes the surroundings of the city. It is no coincidence that Straelen is called the City of Flowers. In recent years the town has become a popular tourist attraction in the Lower Rhine region. Since 1972, Straelen has received several national and international awards for its attractive centre.
Where to stay
We stayed in the town’s motorhome area (51.452, 6.25795 lat, long) next to the pool and a 15-minute walk from the town centre. It costs 10 euros per day or 9 euros if you pay for 3 nights, including filling and emptying water. Electricity is 50 cents per 0.5 Kwh and only accepts 50-cent coins. You have to pay at the pool reception where they give you 50 cent coins if you needed. You can use the pool and showers for 4 euros per person per day. The plots are large and have grass, we recommend the area for visiting the city and surrounding areas.
What to see
Our friend Josep came to the area and showed us around the town. In recent years the city has become a popular tourist attraction due to the exemplary remodeling of the city center. The jewel of the renovation is the historically restored market square. The city received the award from the Foundation for the Support of Literature in Munich on November 28, 1978, and statues of people at different events can be seen throughout the town.
Also worth highlighting is the church of San Peter and Paul, which we visited inside.
What to eat
On the first day, we went to dinner with Josep in the market square where Ben and I shared a plate of fried camembert and another of garlic prawns, both with bread, salad and sauerkraut. Josep ordered the typical schnitzel with fries and mushroom sauce with cream.
On the day of the European soccer championship final we went to Josep’s house to watch it with him, his daughter Tahnee and his girlfriend Andrea, where Josep cooked us a typical German dish which is a meat stew with tomato, he also made a salad of potatoes and the typical sauerkraut. Later Josep’s brother came to watch the game and as you all know, Spain beat England, so Ben wasn’t happy, but I was!
The next day Josep took us to see Dusseldorf known for its fashion industry and art scene, which you can see in the following blog!
