Greece – Parga (En)

Parga is a picturesque city in northwest Greece bathed by the Ionian Sea. Its location is very close to the mouth of the Acheron River, opposite the tiny island of Paxos, possessing magnificent natural caves, and Antipaxos which, according to legend, was created by Poseidon as a gift for his beloved.

We stayed at Camping Valtos (39.285599, 20.389799 lat, long) located at Valtos Beach, the most popular in the city, 2 kilometres from the centre, right on one of the slopes of the famous castle and is profusely surrounded by vegetation. The camping has everything you need, with showers and toilets modern and clean, a kitchen with fridges and a freezer, trees that give you shade, a tavern and a mini market. 27.50 euros per day all included. The staff is really lovely and helpful and they saved our life, as our control remote battery ran out to start the motorhome, and the guy from the reception went to the city and bought us two batteries, brought them to us and did not want to charge us!

We went walking to the castle which is located on a promontory. From it, the views are spectacular, as it offers a spectacular panoramic view of the turquoise waters merging with the horizon. This fortress served as protection against all possible invaders, who used to arrive both by land and by ship, including pirates. We had lunch at Stefanos Tavern at the top of the promontory with magnificent views, where we shared sardines and prawns saganaki, which is a tomato sauce with feta cheese that was delicious.

As it was very hot we spent the time on the beach and the swimming pool bar next to the camping where Asha could be with us and take showers. At the camping, we met Chechu and his family from Madrid, who also has a dog and spent time with us in the pool. We hope to see them again and stay in touch.

We went to the city centre by taxi boat in the evening, where we took amazing photos of the islands and the harbour which is very peculiar, full of restaurants and bars and with spectacular views of the island and castle.

After the harbour we went to the old town, walking through the narrow streets with their houses with coloured facades, a maximum height of three floors and charming wooden terraces. The alleys are lined with cute shops and taverns. We walked back to the camping and stopped at the top of the promontory where the castle is located to have dinner in one of the taverns, where we shared a pizza and enjoyed the panoramic views.

And the next day we went to Igoumenitsa the main port connecting Greece with the islands and Italy, to buy an aircon which has not been delivered yet to us! And you can see this in the next post!
