Portugal – Algarve – Tavira (En)

On Sunday we arrived in Tavira and we stayed in the motorhome area which is really big, with massive plots and included electricity and loading and unloading of black and grey water, a place for washing dishes and shower for 1 euro 5 minutes, all for 11 euros per day. The location is great, just 20 minute’s walk to the town centre. The only downside is in the evening the mosquitoes eat you alive and they are huge! On our first day in the motorhome area, we met our neighbours, two couples from Seville and one couple from Cadiz, really nice and friendly, and we passed the evening with them chatting and having drinks. It is a pity they were leaving the next day, so we hope to see them again in another place soon.

On Tuesday we went to see the town of Tavira which is a city located at the eastern end of the Algarve, 25 Km west of the Spanish border. Through the centre of Tavira runs the Gilao River. Among the things to see in Tavira is the Republica square located in the centre of the old town, in this square, live music concerts are held in its amphitheatre and it is surrounded by restaurants and bars. Next to the square is the Roman Bridge, with its seven arches and more than 80 meters in length, which crosses the river. Also next to the square are the public garden and the turtle fountain. In the old town, you can find also a panoramic medieval castle and the church of Santa María do Castelo, where the tombs of seven knights who died at the hands of Muslim troops are located.

We went down from the castle back to Republica square and we went to the other side of the city where the fisherman’s market is located and where 3 years ago when we were in Portugal, we ate very good prawns. We went to the same restaurant 3 years ago, and we ordered the prawns, delicious, and to our surprise they have barnacles! They told us that it was the area of Sagres and Vila do Bispo that could not catch more barnacles until December but that the rest of Portugal have them. So finally, before crossing to Spain, we ate barnacles which by the way were so good that we ate several portions! They were only 5 euros. In fact, all we ate was prawns and barnacles.

When we finished we went back to the motorhome stopping in a supermarket and a park where Asha played with some children. And today Wednesday we are preparing to go tomorrow to Spain, to a town called la Palma del Condado in Huelva province, where its old town has been declared of national interest, and you will be able to see it in the next post!
