England – The Quarry Park (En)

We set off early in the morning to take the motorhome for its vehicle inspection. At 9 a.m., Helen and Rob picked us up, and Helen decided we should visit The Quarry Park in Shrewsbury. Ben and I had been to Shrewsbury before—you can check out the blog post we published back then—but we had never visited The Quarry. It is a beautiful 29-acre park, framed by the majestic curve of the River Severn. It has been Shrewsbury’s premier recreational spot since the 16th century. A highlight is The Dingle, a floral masterpiece.

What to see

We parked in the lot of St. Chad’s Church, founded in Saxon times and located opposite the park. It was built between 1790 and 1792, following the collapse of the previous church in 1788. Its location and design sparked significant local controversy, as circular churches were uncommon in England and the project required the demolition of a section of the city walls and a tower.

In the park, as you go down a flight of stairs, you come across the Dingle, a floral masterpiece cultivated by the world-renowned gardener Percy Thrower. A charming sunken garden featuring borders of alpine plants, striking seasonal blooms, shrubs, and attractive water features. Amidst the foliage stands the statue of Sabrina, the legendary goddess of the River Severn. It is beautiful and colourful, as you can see from the many photos we took.

We continued walking through the park along the River Severn, passing a bridge—with a really cool pub on the other side—and several statues.

We decided to take a stroll through the streets until we returned to St. Chad’s Church. We passed by a square with an unusual statue and walked along streets lined with beautiful timber-framed houses.

Helen and Rob took us to pick up the motorhome, which passed the technical inspection without any issues. Thanks for everything, Helen and Rob. We’ll see you again in Spain in December.

After saying goodbye to England, family, and friends, we returned to France, where our first stop will be Neufchâtel-Hardelot—a coastal resort town on the Opal Coast—which you’ll see in the next blog post.
