Greece – Ammoudia (En)

Ammoudia is a tiny village on the Ionian coast, with lots of tavernas and a fishing port where you can buy fish directly from the fishermen when they return in the morning. The village sits on a fine sandy beach at the mouth of the Acheron River. It is a truly beautiful place.

Where to stay

We stayed in the free parking lot next to the port and the beach (39.23621, 20.48077 lat, long), where you can spend the night. The parking lot offers no services except for trash cans. It’s a sandy parking lot where you park on the right-hand side, under the trees, as the fishermen park on the other side. The views are beautiful, overlooking the beach, the port, and the tavernas. When we arrived, there were several motorhomes and campervans. The locals told us we could park for free and sleep there until July, when the summer season begins. It’s worth spending at least a day enjoying the beach.

What to see

The first thing we did was take a walk along the beach and return through the woods. The beach has fine sand, and there are showers. The views are beautiful, towards the pier and the coast.

Then we visited the village. First, we walked around the port and its fishing boats. Opposite the port, there are many charming restaurants. We followed the main street to the village square, where the church is located. It was a shame because we were told the taverns had been open, but they wouldn’t reopen until Wednesday, and it was Monday! We couldn’t get anything to eat or drink.

In the afternoon, we walked along the pier. There were fishermen there, and we watched the fishing boats return to the port for the night.

We were told that the fishermen would be back the next day, Tuesday, around 10 a.m., and we could buy fresh fish, which is exactly what we did. The fisherman gave us cuttlefish and a variety of other fish for 10 euros! We had enough food for several days, and it was delicious.

We decided to go to Arta, in the Epirus region, known for its medieval bridge, archaeological sites and 13th-century castle, which you can see in the next blog post.
