England – Devon – Dartmoor National Park (En)
Dartmoor National Park is a vast moorland in Devon, defined by woodland, rivers, wetlands, and tors (rock formations). Trails wind through valleys dotted with Neolithic tombs, Bronze Age stone circles and abandoned medieval farmhouses.
What to see
We drove into the national park. The first thing we came across was Bovey Castle, a large mansion from the early 20th century that is today a 5-star luxury hotel with a sauna, croquet, golf, falconry, spa, tennis, and archery.
We continued driving and entered the heart of the national park where Dartmoor ponies roam the rugged landscape. We stopped and were able to pet a few ponies. The foal wanted to be friends with Asha and followed her everywhere. Drive very slowly as you will come across ponies and sheep in the middle of the road.
We drove on, stopping to see Neolithic tombs, Bronze Age stone circles and abandoned medieval farms. The area is dotted with villages, including Princetown, home of the Dartmoor prison used during the Napoleonic Wars.
In the afternoon we went to have lunch and see Tavistock, the only town in Devon with World Heritage status, which you can see in the next post!
