Cullera – Fallas and Burning (En)
Last Saturday was the last day of the fallas, so Ben, Andreas and I went to see Cullera fallas and see how they burned them. First we saw the fallas and the town ambient. It is not like Valencia but there was also music in the streets, and the people of the town bring flowers to a place in the market. Some of the fallas were damaged due to the storm the day before but some were ok.
The children fallas started to be burned at 8 pm, these fallas do not need firemen so we saw the first one of the small fallas burns. After that, we went to dinner and have drinks to wait until 11 pm when the big fallas will start to be burned. The best fallas are the last in being burned.
After dinner and drinks, we went to see the falla that we thought will be the first one in being burned. The people tried to break the falla with sticks and kick it, so they create holes in the falla for the fire to spread. First, they put petrol on the falla, then the firemen have to arrive and prepare to water the sparkles. Once the firemen are there, there are fireworks and they light firecrackers to go to the falla. And then the falla will be on fire. This falla was a disaster, it will not burn, we suppose due to the rain the night before. So the firemen tried to put fire taking one of the effigies and putting it into the ass of another effigy. It was hilarious! Even with the firemen’s efforts, the falla will not totally burn so we left tired to wait and decided to go to see the second prize falla to be burned.
We arrived at the second prize falla, the place was full of people waiting to see it burn but they were still covering the buildings next to it. Around 12.30 pm started to rain, totally pissing down and we did not have umbrellas! We went under a balcony with a lot more people trying to protect us from the rain, but the rain will not stop and everybody was pretty sure that they will not be able to burn it, and after the disaster of the other falla we decided to find a bar and have some drinks and wait for the rain stop. At 1.30 am the bar was closing and we have to leave, so we went back to the camping totally wet, pants, shoes… the night was a little disaster… hahaha.
